The Day I Fell in Love with Hoops

Christopher Cooper, Writer

I first laid eyes on a basketball when I was 3 years old. As all of us think as children, it’s just another little ball. I realized what it was around when I was 6. I started playing a lot more but I was too little to understand the actual concept of the sport. So around the age of 10, I was slowly starting to acknowledge the meaning and purpose of the sport. I just always thought that it was a very interesting sport. I didn’t know that a ball could ever move that quickly compared to other sports. Basketball has also been used to help with my anxiety and stress. I could watch the sport and play for days and hours on end and it would just relieve my feelings. Basketball has truly become a big part of me. I used to be known as the kid that played baseball because that was all I ever used to play when I was a kid. Now, I am known as a guy that is not too bad at basketball. I would be at work and people would walk in and that’s that white boy that can hoop or that’s ‘White Chocolate” referring to the former Sacramento Kings point guard Jason Williams. Not in a million years would I ever think that this certain sport would have this humongous impact on my life. Basketball changed my life forever.
